Actually, humans need trees, but naturally-existing trees don't need humans. Trees form the backbone of a landscape. A tropical landscape with no trees will be terribly hot & starkly monotonous. The remaining forest trees are SG's natural heritage.
The issue is not about zero planting or wholesale removal, but ensuring that we (as human custodians & cognizant beings) strive to plant the right kind of tree/plant at the right place, & provide it with appropriate care.
It is not right that we install trees at our own convenience (& to make our KPI look good) with little regard to the trees' needs, & then abandon/ condemn them when they are suffering from our selfish, thoughtless actions.
Given the relatively-short history of national landscaping & the continuous development (read: destruction) of SG, there aren't many roadside trees here that are 100 years old.
From the photos, this fallen tree is AGAIN one of those tall, fast-growing (hence weaker wood), big-crowned (top-heavy) but shallow-rooted species, eg. Khaya senegalensis (Senegal Mahogany), Swietenia macrophylla (Big-leaved/ American Mahogany), Syzygium grande (Sea Apple).
The problems caused by inappropriate species selection is exacerbated by horticultural practices like insufficient root space allowance, poor soils & abusive pruning methods (eg. topping/ pollarding) that further weaken the tree structure. All these factors have a negative impact on tree health, & make it decline prematurely.
