V-Day Love Story 2012
Love Story: She passed on university on account of dating him, but it was worth it

Cindy and Siam Joo first met at a friend's BBQ get-together some 39 years ago; they have since been married for 29 years. Although their relationship got so tenuous they lived in separate homes at one point, they continued to care for each other through the years.

Their daughter Jessica wrote:

"The greatest love story in my eyes -- my parents. They met 39 years ago at a mutual friends’ BBQ when my mum was just 17.

"They had a wonderful chat that night when Mummy decided to give her number to Daddy. He asked her out soon after, and the dates and outings eventually turned into something more serious.

"They had many things and topics in common. They dated for almost ten years, enjoying the simple things in life like taking a bus to the beach for picnics, going to the nearby community centre for a swim and driving up to Malaysia with mutual friends for road trips.

"After waiting for 5 years for their HDB flat to be ready, they got married when Mummy was 27 and my big sister was born a year later.

"In the process of all the dating, Mummy did not make it to University despite being a top student all her life. But it was worth it. She met Daddy.

"Four years after my big sister was born, they gave birth to me. Both my parents were not university graduates and they slowly worked very hard from the bottom to provide us with a good home. They sacrificed promotions and increments to leave their job on time to spend more time on us.

"They always had a simple breakfast together before Daddy dropped my Mummy to work. After work, both of them will leave on time so that Daddy can pick Mummy up and they will come home for dinner with us.

"We can see all the happy times they shared during their young and dating years yet we can also see the conflicts build up over the years. Quarrels, disagreements and conflicts were inevitable and often enough at home. It could stem from us the children to our grandparents. But beyond all that, you could always see a love so strong.

"I vividly recall once they had a huge argument and they both stayed separately as we had two houses. Daddy could not sleep properly all night and was sending messages to Mummy to meet for breakfast the next day. I bet Mummy did not sleep well either.

"Behind all the harsh words during their occasional quarrels you could still see the care and concern they had for each other. How mummy would stay up late at night after work to make herbal tea or medicine for daddy when he was ill, and how daddy will be willing to drive all the way just to pick up my mummy so that she don’t have to take a train all the way.

"The love they showed me and taught me was truly unconditional love. How beyond all the quarrels and way past the lovey-dovey honeymoon period that only true love can survive. How they are truly together for better and for worse, in sickness and in health. How a couple can work things out when all the passion from the younger ages and long chats overnight become a more realistic life together with a family and not just the two of you. How they treat each others parents as their own, and spending time and effort for my grand parents to enjoy the last phase of their life.

"The greatest love story of all, my parents, the epitome and true life example of the marriage vow.

"We just celebrated their 29th Wedding anniversary as a family together with a staycation at Rasa Sentosa Hotel and many more to come :)"
